Youthquake 2002

Our trip to Youthquake last year was a fantastic experience for us. What a blessed trip! From the start God's hand was in the planning. The entire trip was at risk because of a shortage of funding for the bus, and a lack of sufficient fundraising possibilities. We were faced with having to come up with $6000, and for a small Parish like ours, that might just as well have been a million bucks!

We really wanted to promote the trip to other local Church Youth Groups, and the bus was a big incentive to doing that. It was hard to promote a trip to North Carolina in a bunch of vans and cars! We needed that bus!

I did a bunch of praying about that bus, as did others I'm sure, and God answered. Our local branch of the VFW gave us the entire amount to cover the bus. I felt so relieved and grateful. I thank God that He cares for His children. I will always be grateful to the VFW for caring about thier community as much as they do.

We had four different Church Youth Groups packed into that bus. And we had a great time, everyone making new friends. We must have seen every Adam Sandler movie on the way down on the bus video system. We held a pizza party in the hallway of our dorm (we took over the entire hallway), scarfing slices, playing games, and plenty of chatting and laughing. Throughout the weekend, we had plenty of hacky-sacking. There were a couple of pranksters that removed the bathroom door in one of the dorms, and carried it down the hall. They did replace the door, after much laughing and hilarity.

All of this fellowship and fun was just a tiny portion of the entire three days down there. Youthquake itself offers many different facets of bonding with Christ. There are talks given, workshops, a lot of skits and joking around, and a fantastic praise music band! The band was truly blessed; they had so much energy, and thier praise music was powerful. Don't think that the music was some old church organ music for the older crowd. This band ROCKED the house! It was a powerful sight to see hundreds and hundreds of teens moshing in front of the stage. Moshing to praise music. There was dancing in the aisles, in the chairs, and in the halls.

The world places a lot of negative stereotype upon young people now-a-days. People tend to be quick to judge them, and usually in not such a good light. Trouble-maker, doper, punk, lazy, etc. A lot of teens are looked at in this light. But it was so refreshing to me to be able to see thousands (there were over 2000 at YQ 2002!) of teens worshiping Jesus in THEIR way, with energy and hip talk and emotion. Truly powerful...
